Building Healthy Communities 101The Los Angeles Housing Department, with the help of Livable Places and Karin Pally Associates, has launched an online informational resource for residents to learn more about affordable housing in Los Angeles. The Building Healthy Communities website offers information about the current lack of affordable housing for low- and moderate-income families in Los Angeles, and shows how affordable housing can be and is being produced in the city. The website introduces key smart growth concepts as potential solutions for producing more housing in Los Angeles while preserving the quality of life in many of the city’s established neighborhoods. In addition, the site helps to clarify some of the myths regarding density and affordable housing, and covers the steps involved in actually producing affordable housing. The site is fully searchable, and also contains a glossary to help visitors understand much of the terminology used in housing and development discussions. Citizens interested in learning more about planning and development in Los Angeles are encouraged to use the site to gather information and become more involved in shaping their neighborhood’s development. The site offers helpful tips on how individuals and neighborhood groups can become partners with developers and local government in creating more livable communities while meeting the region's housing needs. The website can be found at http://www.lacity.org/lahd/curriculum. |
